Ability: Easy

Skills required: Basic Stocking stitch, increases and decreases

You will need:

  • · one pair 4mm straight knitting needles
  • · Tapestry needle for sewing up
  • · Stuffing material
  • · Yarn approx. 25g or 34m/37yds. I used ‘Pura Lana’ from Baruffa , 100% Virgin wool in Aran weight, available

from www.toddshandknits.com in Ruby red 309 .

Basic Abbreviations:

K =knit, P = Purl, RS = right side, WS = wrong side, Dec = decrease sts , st(s) = stitch(es), Inc = Increase sts , Rep = repeat,

St st = stocking st, k every row. R.H.S =right hand side, L.H.S = left hand side, Patt = pattern. R.H.N = Right hand needle,

L.H.N = Left hand needle

Special abbreviations:

K2tog= knit 2 sts together to dec 1 st, SKPO = slip next st onto LHN, k next st, then pass slipped stitch over k st to dec 1 st

P2tog = Purl 2 sts together to dec 1 st. P2tog TBL = p 2 sts tog through back of loops to dec 1 st

Inc = increase st/sts by working into the front and back of the next st on needle. M1 = make 1 st by picking up and

twisting the bar between the stitch on R.H.N and the st on L.H.N, and working into the back of it.

Instructions:

Front & Back work the same

With 4 mm (U.S ) needles cast on 2sts

Row 1 (WS): P2

Row 2: (RS): Inc 2sts into the next 2 sts (4sts)

Row 3: P4

Row 4: K1, M1, K2, M1, K1 (6sts)

Row 5: P6

Row 6: K2, m1, k2, m1, k2 (8sts)

Row 7: P8

Row 8: K3, m1, k2 M1, k3 (10sts)

Row 9: P3, m1(Purl wise), p4, m1, p3 (12 sts)

Row 10: K3, m1, k6, m1, k3 ( 14sts)

Row 11: P14

Row 12: K3, m1, inc1, k6, inc1, m1, k3 (18sts)

Row 13: P18

Row 14: K3, m1, k12, m1, k3 (20sts)

Row 15: P20

Row 16: K3, m1, k14, m1, k3 (22sts)

Row 17: P3, m1, p16, m1, p3 (24sts)

Row 18: K3, m1, k18, m1, k3 (26sts)

Row 19: P26

Row 20: K3, m1, k20, m1, k3 (28sts)

Row 21: P28

Row 22: K28

Row 23: P28

Row 24: K28

Row 25: P28

Row 26: k12, k2tog, skpo, k to end (26sts)

Row 27: P13, turn

Split sts to work each half of heart as follows:

Next row: K9, k2tog, k2 (12 sts) turn,

Next row: P3 p2tog, p7 (11 sts) turn

Next row: K3, skpo, k1, k2tog, k3 (9sts) turn

Next row: P3, p2tog, p4 (8sts) turn

Next row: K3, skpo, k3 (7sts) turn

Next row: (p2tog) x 3 , p1 (4 sts)

Next row: Cast off remaining 4sts and cut yarn.

With WS facing rejoin yarn and P13 and continue other side of heart as follows:

Next row: K3, skpo, k8 (12 sts) turn,

Next row: p7 p2tog tbl, p3 (11 sts) turn

Next row: K3, skpo, k1, k2tog, k3 ( 9sts) turn

Next row: P4, p2tog tbl, p3 (8sts) turn

Next row: K3, k2tog, k3 (7sts) turn

Next row: P1 (p2tog) x 3 (4 sts)

Next row: Cast off remaining 4sts, cut yarn.

Repeat for back of heart.

Making UP

With Right sides facing, sew together leaving at least a 2cm gap. Turn inside out, and fill with stuffing, close up remaining

hole and you heart is complete!
